HARA ga Tatsu

‘HARA ga Tatsu’ expresses feelings of anger or frustration.




The Japanese believe that the heart resides in the belly. For example, samurai commit seppuku, which is thought to be an act of proving that they have no second thoughts, by cutting their bellies open and showing what is inside. And the word ‘tate’ expresses the way something swells up from nothing, as in ‘a cloud rises’ or ‘smoke rises’.


In other words, the word ‘to be angry’ represents ‘something moving like a thrust from the bottom of one's calm heart = stomach’. This is called.
